Diesel Program Expansion $900,000.00

Continuous full enrollment in the two year Diesel Program has prompted the Area Board of Control to approve a $900,000 building expansion plan. Construction will begin in early winter of 2006-2007 to increase the building size to accommodate larger farm equipment, more classrooms and more students. Three full-time instructors are directing this department. Over-the-road diesel mechanics and agricultural related industries continually drive the demand for diesel technicians.

Child Care Facility

Northwest Ks. Technical College is home to many non-traditional students. Coming back for their education, the non-traditional student typically has young children and minimal funds for daycare. Classes begin at 7a.m. for most of the departments. Special arrangements are made by the students to secure child-care from 7-2:30 or later if the parents have part-time employment.

Students need an on-site child-care facility. Some students commute 30-60 miles to attend classes and cross a time zone. All those factors compound choices for the care of their children. A child-care facility on campus would allow children to have lunch with their parents, provide employment for some students and allow application for federal grant funds. Federal grant monies could offer a sliding fee schedule based on income, which in turn, benefits student families.

Ultimately, the addition of a pre-school program to the child-care facility would offer an attractive service to students with children. The campus has building space that can be renovated for a child-care facility. Children may eat in the school cafeteria. A playground and fenced yard would also be required. A pre-school instructor must have a degree in Early Childhood Education and salaries are the majority of the budget to support a quality unit.
