We are looking to hire a Structural Technologist with an education or background in CAD drafting. This position will support transportation engineering projects for our Kansas Division and be based in the Kansas City, KS office. Ideal candidates have one to three years of structural drafting experience. Knowledge of CAD platforms and Microstation is preferred.

    Duties & Responsibilities:
    Draft and create construction documents primarily utilizing Microstation
    Develop preliminary/conceptual plans of proposed work in the form of maps, photos, sketches, Microstation/CAD drawings or written explanation
    Coordinate drafting and design with Project Engineers
    Coordinate design and layout with applicable code requirements
    Gather quantities and perform estimations of project construction costs
    Develop and draw design details, plans, sections and notes independently and from verbal or written direction
    Record and organization of progress files, email correspondence, design alterations and project status
    Print, plot, and scan of various project plans and draw data
    Perform occasional field work or site reconnaissance, sometimes requiring out-of-town travel

    Qualifications:
    Associate’s Degree in Computer Aided Drafting or related technical area required
    Strong knowledge and proficiency (or ability to gain this knowledge) in appropriate software: CAD platforms, MicroStation V8i, and Microsoft Office Suite
    Experience with structural plan layout and detailing of bridges a plus, but not necessary
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate and deliver in a fast-paced team environment
    Strong attention to detail, organization, and collaboration skills are key
    General understanding of engineering principles and practices
    General understanding of project scheduling and deadlines

    The Field Observer observes construction projects at various states of construction for commercial, single and multi-family projects (focus is on the building envelope and rated assemblies).     Primary Responsibilities:

     

    The primary duties of the Transmission & Distribution CAD Designer will include: field surveys/data gathering, computer-aided drafting work, PLS-CADD Design, and the preparation of plans, designs, and specifications. Tasks include but are not limited to:

     

    • Gain an understanding of overhead and underground transmission and distribution facilities,

    SMH Consultants (SMH); a reputable civil engineering and land surveying company based in Manhattan, Kansas; is seeking to fill a full-time position in its Manhattan, Kansas office immediately.

    The applicant must have experience with computer aided drafting and engineering designs in AutoCAD Civil 3D whether educational or professional. CAD experience including internships and other experience is desired. SMH is utilizing the most current versions of Autodesk products. The applicant must have some familiarity with utilizing these software packages. SMH desires an individual with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

    Daily tasks associated with the position would involve working with managers to assemble engineering designs related to streets, drainage, sanitary sewer, and water infrastructure; assembling topographic surveys from information collected in the field and coordinating data collection with field surveyors, preliminary plats, final plats, right of way strip maps, certificates of title, and plot plans.

    Additionally, the individual in the position will also coordinate activities of SMH’s small unmanned aerial vehicle (sUAV) operations including: setting up projects for flight, maintaining drone equipment, analyzing data collected by the drone and insuring licensure currency through the Federal Aviation Administration. Other duties in this realm include researching expanding the use of the SMH sUAV. Although experience in this field is desired it is not required.

    Other duties may include the possibility of inspecting construction projects in the field to assure conformance with engineering plans, general office duties, and maintaining SMH’s CAD operating systems to insure software/hardware demand capacity.

Under general supervision, perform drafting/technical support duties using AutoCAD (CAD) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Ability to create detailed computerized engineering construction drawings, maps, and plans and profiles, mechanical equipment and piping, electrical equipment and layouts, and structural detailing.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Drafter Associate
    • Ability to obtain and review information from record drawings, files, survey notes, photos, and AutoCAD forms in alignment with drafting standards.
    • Create As-Built drawings using AutoCAD, from survey data, inspector notes, and collected GPS points and redline drawings.
    • Create alignments for Asset Recording group (ARG) to accomplish work effort for posting to asset mapping.
    • Perform design and drafting related activities including project layout/plotting sheets set plans.

Make field trips as necessary to obtain locations and takes measurements and photographs to revise drawings, maps, and projects proposed improvements, and layout construction plans and working drawings.
    • Plan projects, develop and implement programs, and maintain records pertaining to a particular functional area of the department.
    • Develop detailed drawings for water conveyance structures, pump stations, reservoir and dams, mechanical systems, pipelines, electrical systems, treatment process, reinforced concrete, and steel structures, and recreational facilities, from engineer provided design notes, field notes, and digital information.
    • Provide AutoCAD drawings for construction projects while adhering to established milestone schedules and Denver Water AutoCAD and drafting standards.
    • Prepare contract and permitting documents indicating property lines, building locations, rights-of-way, utilities, paving, lighting plans, and other installations and facilities.
